Swimming Pool Health Safety

General Issues for Consideration

  • Adults should accompany children at all times.
  • All users should be made aware of potential hazards relating to pool use.
  • Always exit the pools using the pool ladders.
  • Avoid the use of glass in and around the pool.
  • Be aware that warm temperature in spas can make you drowsy.
  • Do not over crowd your pool or spa.
  • Do not swim if the pool water is cloudy.
  • Do not allow diving in shallow water.
  • Electrical appliances should not be used near the pool.
  • Ensure a first aid kit is available for accidents.
  • Pools and spas that are treated with the correct chemical levels will offer the bather a safe, hygienic and comfortable environment.

Safety Guide for Swimming Pool Chemical Use

  • Always read the label. Take note of the risk and safety phrases on each chemical. Read instructions on each product thoroughly before use.
  • Always add chemicals to water and never vice-versa.
  • Always handle chemicals in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors.
  • Always pre-dissolve chemicals in a clean plastic container.
  • Avoid spillage and if occurrence then follow full instructions on correct procedure.
  • Before disposing of empty chemical containers, rinse them thoroughly in the pool.
  • In the event of a spillage, clean up using clean receptacles and dispose of in the pool. Flush area thoroughly with large volume of fresh water.
  • Keep all chemicals locked away and out of reach of children and animals.
  • Never mix different chemicals. Acid based products and chlorine products will cause dangerous by-products.
  • Never use unlabelled chemicals.
  • Store chemicals in a secure, dry and cool place out of the reach of children and animals.
  • Always wash hands after handling pool chemicals.
  • To minimise the use of chemicals it is advisable for bathers to shower before entry into pool water.
