cleaning pool pumpRegular cleaning and maintenance of our swimming pools pump and filtering system is just one of the many basic tasks pool-owners need to complete regularly. Ensuring regularly looked after and well maintained filtering systems can save us pool owners a very time consuming (not to mention expensive!) ordeal to put up with further down the line. Some owners have had to replace entire filtration systems just because they avoided simple tasks.

By simply following these basic steps, you’ll save yourself a lot of time and energy and not to mention, money!

  • Turn off both the pool cleaner pump and the pool heater. If the heater has been on recently, wait for it to cool down before switching off the cleaner.
  • Close the skimmer and the main drain valves. If the pool pump is located below the water level in the pool, then close the filter valve.
  • Remove the pump lid and the swimming pools basket. Remember that the basket can become brittle over time, so also check to see if you need a replacement! Leave the basket and its contents to dry out before washing with a hose. One way to speed things up here is to have a spare pump basket ready to swap with the dirty basket.
  • Next re-install the pump basket. If your basket twists to lock in place, be careful not to over-tighten it.
  • Inspect the pump lid and o-ring for cracks or damage and lubricate pump lid o-ring with lubricant if it appears dry.
  • Install pump lid and o-ring. Again, be careful again not to over-tighten it.
  • Put the filter valve back in the "filter" position and open the main drain valve. Also, open the air relief valve on the pool filter.
  • Turn the pools’ pump back on. Once the pump has caught a prime, open the remaining skimmer valves one at a time carefully. When a steady stream of water is visible out of the air relief valve, close the valve.
  • Turn the pool cleaner pump back on and then the heater if you want to get your pool back up to temperature.

Now you’re all ready to go! Finally, here’s some final pointers on cleaning the skimmer lid:

  • Remove the skimmer lid.
  • Remove the skimmer basket and empty it out.
  • Install the basket back into the skimmer.
  • Install skimmer lid and turn the system back on.
